Palm Tree Study

The South Carolina light seemed to turn this tree into a rainbow! It was one of those "must paint" moments :)

"Placid Waters" 14x11 Oil

Found a pleasing area of the river towards evening,
the sky was bright, like light through ground
glass and the water was calm and peaceful.

Painted this quickly (under 2 hours) at a place called green house. I had no idea what this place is but apparently it's some sort of art house.

Kinda quiet round here but this is what I've been doing in the way of plein air painting lately. Just stuff around my neighborhood, haven't been very adventurous..

Winter in Hilton Head, SC

this week's plein air paintings. These are 3"x5" and are awesome to learn how to simplify and focus on tones, shapes and color without the distraction of details. Not to mention they take no time at all to make; less than an hour a piece.

Hilton Head Island

This was done on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. :) I miss it there already!

New medium, new challenge: Watercolors. It's a fun but difficult medium that requires a little planning. For example, when painting the white flower, you paint everything darker to make the flower look light. I love how the colors mix when the paint is wet. Using a towel to soak up the paint is also a good way of 'erasing'. This a great way of getting whites back after doing a wash like the clouds on the blue sky wash.
